When you start electronics projects you think "a few resistors will do", but you soon stall because the value you need is missing. On the other hand, buying a set of tens of thousands of parts from the start piles up parts you never use. This article covers what a beginner needs for perfboard practice and how many, what is good to buy as a kit and what to buy individually, and how to organize and store parts.
Basic principles
- At first, stock plenty of common parts in commonly used values, and buy special parts when you need them.
- Parts sets (kits) are good for the number of different values for the price, but the quantity differs by value. Commonly used values (330 Ω, 1 kΩ, 10 kΩ, 100 nF) may run short in a kit, so top them up separately.
- For parts tied directly to safety (fuses, regulators), choose products with a clear source (Electronic Parts Buying Guide).
Passive components
Resistors
One E12 set allows most practice, and when needed, combine two for E24 values (such as 3 kΩ and 5.1 kΩ) with the series & parallel resistor calculator. We recommend having 20 or more of the commonly used 330 Ω, 1 kΩ, 4.7 kΩ, and 10 kΩ (Reading Resistors).
Capacitors
A 100 nF ceramic goes in one per IC, so buy 30 or more (Power Rails, Grounding, and Decoupling Capacitor Placement).
Semiconductors
- LEDs: about 10 each of 5 mm red, green, yellow, blue, and white. A few 3 mm and high-brightness ones are good to have too.
- Diodes: 20 of the 1N4148 (small-signal), 10 of the 1N4007 (rectifier and protection), and a few each of 3.3 V and 5.1 V Zener diodes (How to Use Diodes and Zener Diodes).
- Transistors: 20 of the 2N3904 (NPN) and 10 of the 2N3906 (PNP), or the BC547 and BC557 families (Transistor Switch Circuits).
- Regulators: the 7805 (5 V), and a few 3.3 V regulators if needed (7805 Power Board).
ICs
- 20 tact switches (6×6 mm)
- 2 to 3 DIP switches with 4 positions
- A few slide switches (for power)
- A 10 kΩ potentiometer (B type) and a few 10 kΩ trimmers (Potentiometers)
- An active buzzer (the type that sounds just by applying voltage) and a passive buzzer
Connection and auxiliary parts
- Perfboard: 3 to 5 individual-pad FR-4 boards in various sizes (for example, 7×9 cm, 5×7 cm) (What Is Perfboard?)
- Solid wire (AWG 22–26) in several colors: red, black, yellow, green, white
- Pin headers, 2-pin terminal blocks, battery clips, a USB power breakout (USB 5V Power Board)
- Heat-shrink tubing and insulating tape
- Jumper wires (male-male, male-female) and alligator clip leads
Storage and organization
When parts get mixed up, you waste a lot of time rechecking values.
- Put them in a compartment parts box or drawer organizer by type, and label every compartment (value, type).
- Put resistors in small zip bags by value and write the value on the outside.
- Store static-sensitive CMOS ICs in conductive foam or anti-static bags.
- Avoid moisture. Adding a desiccant for parts with solder surfaces and for ICs is good.
- Briefly noting how many parts you used helps with the next purchase.
Do not buy everything at once
For the first month, starting with about half of the list above and filling in what runs short as you practice wastes less. Your first practice can start with just a few resistors, an LED, and a supply, like Getting Started with Patterndo: Build an LED Circuit.
Summary
If you have plenty of resistors (E12, 10 Ω to 1 MΩ) and capacitors (100 nF ceramic and a few electrolytics), plus LEDs, diodes, transistors, the 555, LM358, basic logic ICs, sockets, and switches, most beginner practice is possible. Label and organize the parts, and buy only as much as you need. Tips for buying parts continue in the Electronic Parts Buying Guide.
