Even in a small circuit, power and ground are the path all the parts share. If that path is tidy, the circuit runs stably; if it is a mess, you get problems like resets for no reason, flickering LEDs, or digits that change. This article explains how to build power rails on a perfboard, how to keep ground tidy, and where to put decoupling capacitors.

The basic power rail layout

A rail is a line laid along the board edge to supply power to many parts in common. It is usually made like this.

  • Use one or two lines at the top of the board as the +V (for example, +5V) rail, and one or two lines at the bottom as the GND rail.
  • Lay bare wire or thick tinned wire along the rail and solder at every hole it passes so it is firmly fixed.
  • Put the power entry (a connector) at one end, and connecting it again at the far end of the rail reduces the rail resistance.

The +V rail on top, the GND rail on the bottom, 100 nF capacitors next to the IC power pins, and a large capacitor at the power entry

Connect an IC's power pins to the rail with the shortest wires possible. A DIP-14 IC usually has +V on pin 14 and GND on pin 7, so if you put the IC close to the rails, both pins come down short. The power pin positions differ between ICs, so check the datasheet (see Reading DIP IC Pin Numbers).

Gathering ground in one place

Ground (GND) is the reference point for voltage. If the ground line is long or several parts share one strand, then when a large current flows, voltage appears across the ground line itself and the reference wobbles. Simple tips follow.

  1. Make the GND rail thick and short.
  2. Gather the ground of parts that draw large current (motors, relays, many LEDs) separately, near the power entry.
  3. For sections handling analog signals (sensors, audio), connect to ground at a place the ground current of digital ICs does not pass through.
  4. On boards that use different supplies (for example, 5 V logic and a 12 V load), always connect the grounds at one point. If the grounds are not connected, the signal references differ and it does not work.

How to place decoupling capacitors

A digital IC draws a short, large current at the moment its output switches. If the supply line is long, the supply sloshes at that moment and becomes noise that makes other ICs misbehave. To prevent this, attach a small capacitor right next to the IC's power pins.

  • Connect a 100 nF (0.1 µF) ceramic capacitor to each IC, between the power pin and ground pin, with the shortest possible wiring. As in the figure, stand it upright in the rows near the IC's +V and GND pins.
  • Put a 47 to 220 µF electrolytic capacitor near the entry where power comes in, to absorb sloshing in the overall supply. Mind the polarity.
  • The longer the wire between the capacitor and the IC, the less effective it is. A few millimeters can make a difference.

Designing the power entry

If you build the place where power comes in to provide both protection and an indicator, the work becomes much easier.

ElementRole
Connector or terminal blockEasy to connect and disconnect the power wires
Reverse-polarity protection diode (in series)Protects the circuit even if polarity is reversed (about 0.7 V drop)
Large electrolytic capacitorStabilizes the supply
Power indicator LED + resistorShows whether power is on
Switch (optional)Connect and cut

For battery power, follow Making 5V from a 9V Battery: Building a 7805 Power Board, and for USB power, Building a USB 5V Power Board, and you can build this arrangement exactly.

Voltage drop and wire thickness

Wire has resistance too, so voltage drops when the current is large. If you run a line that carries a lot of current with thin wire for long, it gets hot and the voltage falls. Use thick wire for high-current lines (motors, many LEDs) and keep them short. For ordinary logic circuits (tens of mA), thin wire is enough.

What you must do before applying power

  1. Visual check: make sure there is no solder joining neighboring pads.
  2. Continuity test: set the multimeter to continuity (or resistance) mode and check that +V and GND are not connected. If it beeps, it is a short.
  3. Polarity check: look again at the electrolytic capacitors, diodes, and IC orientation.
  4. Current-limited supply: if possible, use a bench supply with current limiting, or put a resistor or fuse in series with the power line the first time you turn it on (see Choosing a Bench Power Supply).

Summary

Make the power rails two thick, short lines along the board edge, gather ground in one place and keep it tidy, and put a 100 nF decoupling capacitor right next to each IC's power pins. Put a large capacitor and a protection diode at the power entry, and check for shorts with a continuity test before powering up, and you prevent many problems in advance.
