The soldering iron is the tool that most determines the quality of perfboard work. With the same parts and the same skill, differences in an iron's heat delivery and temperature stability change how many cold joints you get and how much the pads lift. The market has many kinds, from fixed-wattage irons costing a few dollars to temperature-controlled stations and portable USB irons, so at first it is hard to know what to buy. This article covers the types of iron and their differences, what wattage and temperature mean, tip shapes, care, and what to check before buying.

Types of irons

TypeCharacteristicsWho it suits
Fixed-wattage iron (25–40 W)Cheapest and simplest. No temperature control, so it keeps heating and the temperature variesThose who solder simple things only occasionally
Temperature-adjustable iron (dial)Roughly set the temperature with a dial on the handle or bodyA fair choice for beginners
Soldering station (temperature-regulated)A tip sensor measures temperature and holds the set value; ceramic heaters heat up fastHobbyists who solder often
USB or DC portable ironSmall and heats quickly; many support USB-C power. Shows the set temperatureWhen you move around or have a small bench
Gas ironWorks without mains power. Temperature is hard to controlOutdoor repairs (not recommended for board work)

For lead-free work where accurate temperature matters, or perfboard work where you solder many joints in a row, a temperature-regulated type that holds temperature steady is the most comfortable.

Wattage and temperature are different things

  • Wattage (W): the "power" of heat the iron can deliver. It relates to the ability to recover temperature quickly even when a large pad (a power rail or a large connector) draws heat away.
  • Temperature (°C): the temperature the tip actually reaches. A regulated iron adjusts wattage to match the set value.

For perfboard work, 40–60 W class is enough. A fixed iron of 30 W or less lacks heat and often makes cold joints on large pads. On the other hand, 100 W or more is too much for beginners.

The recommended working temperatures by solder type are about 300–350°C for leaded solder and 340–380°C for lead-free (Soldering Basics, Choosing Solder and Flux).

Choosing a tip shape

Tips are consumables, and the shape greatly changes how easy the work is.

TipCharacteristicsUse
Conical (pointed)Allows precision work, transfers little heatSmall pads, SMD
Chisel (blade or flat, 1.6–2.4 mm)Large contact area gives good heat transferGeneral perfboard soldering, wire connections
Bevel or C-typeA wide face carries a lot of heatLarge terminals, ground pads

For starting perfboard work we recommend a chisel tip of 1.6 to 2.4 mm. It is easy to touch the pad and part lead at the same time. When choosing an iron, also check that replacement tips from the same maker are easy to get.

Tip care

  • Tin it right after warming up: the first time you heat it, coat the tip thinly with fresh solder (tinning) to prevent oxidation.
  • Cleaning the tip: a brass wool is better than a wet sponge, with less change in tip temperature and a longer life. Do not rub it with sandpaper or a file; the plating comes off.
  • When not in use: leave a thick bead of solder on the tip and put it on the stand, or turn the power off. Left for long, it oxidizes and solder will not stick.
  • Too high a temperature: above 400°C, the tip's life shortens sharply and flux burns and turns black.
  • Oxidized tip: if solder will not stick, clean it with tip activator or replace it with a new tip.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Temperature range and display: a range of 200–450°C, and whether it shows the set temperature
  2. Heat-up time: a regulated station usually takes 20–60 seconds, a portable one around 10 seconds
  3. Whether a stand is included: it is essential for safety.
  4. Power cord and handle: whether the cord is flexible and the handle shields heat
  5. Ground terminal and ESD safety: if you handle CMOS ICs, a grounded product is better.
  6. Availability of replacement tips: whether you can get various shapes
  7. Safety certification: check for the certification mark required where you live.
  8. Power: for a USB iron, check the power it needs (for example, a 65 W or higher PD charger).

Rather than looking only for the cheapest, we recommend a mid-priced one with stable temperature and tips that are easy to get. An iron is a tool you use for years.

Tools worth having together

Summary

For perfboard soldering, a regulated soldering station or a temperature-adjustable 40–60 W class iron is suitable, and a chisel tip of 1.6 to 2.4 mm is easy to use. Keep the tip always tinned and clean it with brass wool. After choosing an iron, continue to Choosing Solder and Flux to decide your materials.
