The bases you can build a circuit on are broadly three: a breadboard, a perfboard, and a custom-ordered PCB. Even for the same circuit, the time, cost, finish, and reliability differ greatly depending on where you build it. This article compares the three and covers what to choose by project stage (experiment → prototype → finished).

Breadboard

A test board where you build circuits by pushing part leads into holes with no soldering. Five holes are connected in a line on either side of the center groove, and the edges have power rails.

  • Pros: you can build a circuit quickly and fix it right away. Best for trying out ideas.
  • Cons: when contacts get loose, operation cuts in and out intermittently and the cause is hard to find. With many jumper wires, it gets tangled. It is not suitable for high-frequency circuits, noise-sensitive circuits, or large currents.
  • Suited for: checking how an unfamiliar circuit behaves, deciding part values, short tests.

Perfboard

A method of building circuits by soldering parts onto a board that has only holes (What Is Perfboard?).

  • Pros: it is soldered, so contacts are solid and last long. You need not make a dedicated PCB and can start right away. It is also easy to modify by changing just one or two parts.
  • Cons: circuits with a lot of wiring take long and are easy to get wrong. Making many of the same circuit is a hassle. The wiring is long, which is unfavorable for fast signals.
  • Suited for: prototypes, personal finished projects, one or two small circuits, practice and assignments.

Custom PCB

A board made by a factory from a drawing designed in circuit design software (PCB Ordering Guide, Free Circuit Design Software Compared).

  • Pros: the wiring is already done, so you only solder the parts, and you can make as many identical circuits as you like. You can use small surface-mount (SMD) parts, and it suits fast and precision circuits.
  • Cons: you have to learn design, and if there is an error you must order again. Fabrication and shipping take time.
  • Suited for: finished products, small-batch production, complex or fast circuits.

Recommendation by stage

  1. Experiment stage (breadboard): quickly check whether the circuit works. Try by changing values.
  2. Prototype stage (perfboard): once it is confirmed to work, solder it onto a perfboard to make one that runs reliably. Drawing the layout and wiring first in Patterndo reduces mistakes and fixes part positions (Getting Started with Patterndo).
  3. Finished stage (PCB, when needed): if you will make many of the same circuit or size and reliability matter, move the design to a PCB.

Most hobby projects end at stage 2, and that is enough.

Which to choose: a quick decision table

SituationRecommendation
You want to test an unfamiliar circuitBreadboard
You will finish just one as an assignment or practicePerfboard
You will put a single board in a case and use it longPerfboard (or PCB)
You need five or more of the same boardPCB
You use SMD partsPCB (or an adapter board)
Fast signals above 100 kHz, precision analog circuitsPCB
You are testing all of thisBreadboard → perfboard, in order

When moving from perfboard to PCB

The parts list and connections (netlist) of a circuit verified on perfboard become the starting point for PCB design. The perfboard placement and wiring themselves are not carried over to the PCB as is, so you design the part positions and wiring afresh in PCB design software. The connection information made in Patterndo is useful as a reference when redrawing the schematic (Reading Schematic Symbols).

Summary

A breadboard is for quick experiments, a perfboard for solid prototypes and small-quantity builds, and a PCB for repeat builds and precise finished products. Verify the circuit first on a breadboard (or with Patterndo simulation), then move it to perfboard, and consider a PCB when it becomes necessary.
