SN74LS00NSN = 제조사(텍사스 인스트루먼트) 접두어, 74LS00 = 기능(NAND 4개), N = DIP 패키지
HD74LS00PHD = 다른 제조사 접두어, P = DIP

핀 간격은 2.54mm(0.1인치)가 기본입니다.

  • 호환 번호: LM358 ↔ LM2904(비슷한 특성, 전원 범위 다름), 2N3904 ↔ BC547(핀 배열 확인), 74LS ↔ 74HC(핀 배치는 같으나 전원 전압과 레벨이 다름)(74LS·74HC 로직 게이트 기초).

Electronic parts with similar names cannot be used if their specifications differ, and even parts with the same name vary in quality by seller and maker. The mistakes people make most when buying parts for the first time are things like "I bought it by name but the package was different", "the quantity was too large", and "the part was fake". This article covers how to read part names and specs, the specifications to check before buying, the kinds of sellers, and how to find substitutes.

Reading part names

A part name usually consists of maker prefix + function number + package or grade suffix.

ExampleInterpretation
SN74LS00NSN = maker prefix (Texas Instruments), 74LS00 = function (four NANDs), N = DIP package
HD74LS00PHD = another maker's prefix, P = DIP
LM358N / LM358PN and P = 8-pin DIP, D = SOIC (surface mount)
NE555 / NE555PSame function, P = DIP
1N4148Small-signal diode (the same spec regardless of maker)
2N3904 / BC547Transistors. If the names differ, the pinout and characteristics may differ

If only the prefix (maker) differs and the function number is the same, they are generally compatible. But if the suffix (package) differs, the shape may be completely different and may not fit a perfboard, so always check. In particular, the same part is often sold in both DIP and SMD (surface-mount) forms. For perfboard, pick the DIP (through-hole) version.

What to check before buying

  1. Package: confirm DIP, TO-92, TO-220, through-hole. The pin pitch is 2.54 mm (0.1 inch) by default.
  2. Ratings: check that the voltage, current, and power ratings suit the circuit (1/4 W for resistors, 16 V or higher for capacitors, and so on).
  3. Tolerance: check that it suits the use, such as ±5% or ±1% for resistors and ±10–20% for capacitors.
  4. Supply voltage range: using a 3.3 V-only part in a 5 V circuit destroys it. The allowed voltage differs between ICs (How to Read a Datasheet).
  5. Pinout: check the pin numbers and functions in the datasheet.
  6. Datasheet exists: avoid parts without detailed documentation.

Quantity and minimum order quantity

  • MOQ (minimum order quantity): depending on the distributor, you may not be able to buy one of each part, and sometimes it is in units of 10 or 100. If the parts are cheap, ordering at once reduces shipping costs.
  • Get spares: allowing for parts you break or mess up while soldering, buy 20 to 30% more resistors, LEDs, transistors, and sockets. For ICs, we recommend one or two spares.
  • Consumables are economical in packs (Starter Parts Kit).

Where to buy

SellerCharacteristicsWhat to watch
Local parts markets and physical storesSame-day purchase, see it yourself, can ask for adviceStock and variety may be limited
Domestic online electronics shopsSmall quantities possible, local-language guidance, fast deliveryPrices are relatively high
Authorized international distributors (DigiKey, Mouser, LCSC, and so on)Huge selection, datasheet links, accurate stock infoShipping cost and time, cost for small orders
Open marketplaces and overseas shopsVery cheap, many kinds of kitsRisk of fake ICs and recycled parts, quality varies

For important ICs (power regulators, analog ICs, and so on) and expensive parts, buy from an authorized distributor, while for cheap general-purpose items such as resistors and LEDs, buying from kits or open marketplaces is fine.

Telling fake and recycled parts

  • Be suspicious if the lettering on the IC surface has been erased or the markings are not uniform.
  • A product with the same name at a suspiciously low price may be recycled or a different part.
  • Check operation as soon as you receive it. Test a suspicious IC alongside other ICs, and do not use it if the heat is abnormal.
  • For parts tied directly to safety (fuses, power sections), use trustworthy products.

How to find substitutes

If the part you want is out of stock or expensive, you can look for a substitute.

  • Same function, different maker: parts that differ only in prefix are mostly compatible (SN74LS00 ↔ HD74LS00).
  • Compatible numbers: LM358 ↔ LM2904 (similar characteristics, different supply range), 2N3904 ↔ BC547 (check the pinout), 74LS ↔ 74HC (same pinout but different supply voltage and levels) (74LS and 74HC Logic Gate Basics).
  • Distributor parametric search: filter by conditions like voltage, current, and package to find similar parts.
  • Compare datasheets: compare the pinout, supply range, absolute maximum ratings, and typical circuits (How to Read a Datasheet).

When using a substitute, check that it meets the ratings under all the conditions of the circuit. Similar names do not mean the same.

Buying checklist

  1. Decide the exact name and package of the part you want to buy.
  2. Open the datasheet and check the pinout and ratings.
  3. Calculate the quantity you need plus spares.
  4. Compare two or three sellers that carry the same part for price, shipping, and stock.
  5. Check reviews and information, and choose an authorized distributor for important parts.
  6. When it arrives, check the count and surface, and test operation.

Summary

Read the function and package from the part name, choose DIP (through-hole) versions for perfboard, and confirm ratings and pinout from the datasheet. Buy important ICs from authorized distributors and prepare plenty of spares. Deciding your parts list is easier with the Starter Parts Kit as a reference.
