출력 전류최대 약 200mA(소스/싱크)
2/3 (THRES), 1/3 (TRIG)

You bought a part, but which pin is which, how many volts it can withstand, and how many mA it can pass are not printed on the packaging. A datasheet holds all of that information. Opening one for the first time is intimidating, with its English, tables, and graphs, but the places a beginner should look first are fixed, and reading just a few spots prevents most accidents. This article covers how a datasheet is organized, what to look at first, the difference between absolute maximum ratings and recommended operating conditions, and reading the electrical characteristics table.

Where to get a datasheet

  • Search the part name (for example, NE555, LM358, or 2N3904) and datasheet.
  • PDFs from the manufacturer's site (Texas Instruments, onsemi, and so on) or a distributor's product page are trustworthy. Sites of unclear origin may have old or wrong versions.
  • Even for the same part, the datasheet differs by manufacturer (for example, the LM358 is made by several makers). Look at the one that matches the manufacturer and suffix (package) of what you bought (Electronic Parts Buying Guide).

The three things to look at first

  1. The pinout diagram: check that it is a view from above (Top View), and look at the position of pin 1 (notch, dot) and the direction of numbering (Reading DIP IC Pin Numbers). For packages like the transistor's TO-92, check whether it is a front view with the flat face toward you or a view from below (Transistor Switch Circuits).
  2. The supply voltage range: see whether it can be used in a 5 V circuit and whether it also works at 3.3 V.
  3. Input and output current limits: see how much current the output can supply and how much the input accepts.

The two tables have similar names and are confusing, but their meanings are completely different.

ItemMeaningHow to use it
Absolute Maximum RatingsLimits beyond which the part may be permanently damagedDo not operate near these values. Leave margin even for momentary surges
Recommended Operating ConditionsThe range where normal operation and performance are guaranteedDesign within this range

For example, if an IC's absolute maximum supply voltage is 7 V and its recommended operation is 4.75 to 5.25 V, then a 5 V supply is within the recommended range, and going over 7 V can break it. Using it at values close to the absolute maximum makes operation unstable or shortens life.

Reading the electrical characteristics table

The table has minimum (min), typical (typ), and maximum (max).

  • min/max are the limits the manufacturer guarantees. Design to these values.
  • typ is merely a usual value and is not guaranteed. Designing by this value alone causes problems with unit-to-unit variation and temperature changes.
  • Each value comes with test conditions (supply voltage, current, temperature). Check whether your circuit's conditions are the same.

Example: the 2N3904 transistor

ItemValue (approx.)Meaning
Vceo40 VMaximum collector–emitter voltage
Ic200 mAMaximum collector current
hFE100–300 (Ic = 10 mA)Current gain. A wide range
Vce(sat)About 0.2 V or lessVoltage drop when fully on

hFE has a wide range such as 100–300, so switch design uses a forced beta of 10 and designs to the minimum value.

Example: the NE555 timer

ItemValue (approx.)
Supply voltage4.5 – 16 V
Output currentUp to about 200 mA (source/sink)
Threshold voltage2/3 of supply (THRES), 1/3 (TRIG)

Knowing these values explains why the component values and supply of the 555 timer circuit are chosen as they are.

Units and prefixes

Values in tables carry prefixes such as mA, µA, nF, and pF. Always convert to base units before calculating (the Ohm's law calculator accepts inputs like 20m and 4.7k).

Using the graphs

  • Current–voltage graphs: you can read the forward voltage of a diode or LED against current (LED Current-Limiting Resistors).
  • Temperature behavior: see how performance changes as temperature rises.
  • Output voltage limits: check how far from the supply an op-amp's output can go (LM358 comparator).

Application circuits and layout recommendations

The typical circuit (Typical Application) provided by the manufacturer is a verified connection. Power parts especially have input and output capacitor values specified, so follow them as is (Making 5V from a 9V Battery). The general recommendation to put 100 nF next to the power pin is in nearly every datasheet (Power Rails, Grounding, and Decoupling Capacitor Placement).

Part design checklist

Before using a new part, check these items.

  1. Did you confirm the pinout and the position of pin 1?
  2. Is the supply voltage within the recommended operating range?
  3. Do the input and output voltage levels match the other parts they connect to? (Connecting 3.3V and 5V Signals)
  4. Is the current within the rating?
  5. Are there recommended external parts (capacitors, resistors)?
  6. Does the package fit perfboard?

Summary

In a datasheet, first read the pinout, supply range, current limits, and the difference between absolute maximum ratings and recommended conditions, and design with guaranteed values (min/max), not typical values (typ). At first, build the habit of looking at just four places: the first page, the pin descriptions, the ratings table, and the application circuit. Next, see the Electronic Parts Buying Guide and the Self-Study Roadmap for Electronics.
