With electronics, building as you go and stepping through stages improves you much faster and sticks much longer than reading a book from the first page. But if you do not know what to do first, you wander among the material scattered on the Internet. This article covers a step-by-step order for teaching yourself electronics, the goal of each stage, practice tasks, and what to do when you get stuck. The time assumes steady effort of a few hours a week and varies greatly by person.
The big picture of study
Move on to each stage only after the previous one feels natural. There is no need to rush.
Stage 0: Preparation
- Basic math: four operations, fractions and proportion, exponents (powers of 10), and unit prefixes (k, m, µ, n, p) comfortably is enough.
- Tools: multimeter, soldering iron, perfboard, parts kit (Starter Parts Kit, How to Choose a Multimeter, How to Choose a Soldering Iron)
- Safety rules (Soldering Safety)
Stage 1: DC circuit basics (2–3 weeks)
What to learn: the meaning of voltage, current, and resistance, Ohm's law (V = I × R), power (P = V × I), series and parallel connections, and Kirchhoff's laws (current conservation, voltages summing to zero).
Practice:
- Connect an LED and a resistor and calculate the current with Getting Started with Patterndo: Build an LED Circuit.
- Compare hand calculation with the results from the Ohm's law calculator and the series & parallel resistor calculator.
- Measure voltage and resistance yourself with a multimeter and compare with the calculations.
Self-check: can you work out in your head the resistor value that lights an LED at 10 mA from a 5 V supply?
Stage 2: Basic parts (3–4 weeks)
What to learn: reading resistors, capacitors (polarity, types, charging and discharging), diodes and Zeners, LEDs, transistor switches, and voltage dividers.
Practice:
Self-check: from a part's name and polarity, can you tell where and how to insert it?
Stage 3: Basic circuits (3–4 weeks)
What to learn: the 555 timer (astable and monostable), pull-ups and pull-downs, switch debounce, and simple blinking and alarms.
Practice:
Stage 4: Digital logic (4–6 weeks)
What to learn: binary numbers, logic gates, the difference between 74LS and 74HC, flip-flops, counters, decoders, and seven-segment displays.
Practice:
At this stage, laying out in the Patterndo editor first, checking by simulation, and then soldering helps a lot (Using Patterndo Simulation).
Stage 5: Analog (4 weeks)
What to learn: the basic operation of op-amps, comparators, filters, and power circuits (regulators).
Practice: Building a Voltage Comparator with the LM358, 7805 Power Board.
Stage 6: Microcontrollers (ongoing)
What to learn: choosing a development board, digital I/O, analog input, PWM, I2C sensors, and matching levels.
Practice: Arduino vs. ESP32 vs. Pico, Mounting a Development Board on Perfboard, I2C Wiring Basics.
Stage 7: Extending your design
What to learn: schematic symbols and reading them, schematic software, PCB design and ordering.
Practice: Reading Schematic Symbols, Free Circuit Design Software Compared, PCB Ordering Guide.
Study tips
- Build and measure. Knowledge you only read and never do with your hands is soon forgotten. Even for a small circuit, solder it yourself and measure it with a multimeter.
- Calculate and check. When deciding part values, calculate first, and comparing with the measured values deepens understanding.
- Build a habit of reading datasheets (How to Read a Datasheet).
- Keep study notes. Recording schematics, part values, measurements, mistakes, and fixes helps a great deal on your next project.
- Mistakes are material. The experience of burning a part or getting the orientation wrong sticks in memory longest (The 10 Mistakes Beginners Make Most Often).
Example reference books
It is good to keep a beginner book and a reference book together. "Make: Electronics" (Charles Platt) is known as a beginner book that teaches by following experiments, and "The Art of Electronics" (Horowitz and Hill) is a classic reference that builds design sense. Look at books in a library or bookstore and pick the one that fits your level.
When you get stuck
- Break the problem into small pieces and check how far it works (It Is Finished but It Does Not Work: A Step-by-Step Checklist).
- Simplify the circuit and check from the smallest working unit.
- If you organize photos, schematics, and measurements when asking a question, it is easier to get help.
- Coming back after a few days off, you sometimes see mistakes you could not see before.
Summary
Proceed in the order DC basics → basic parts → basic circuits → digital logic → analog → microcontrollers → extending your design, building and measuring at each stage. Whatever stage you are at, you can pick the matching article from the guide list and continue into practice.
