USB(PC 연결형)
If a multimeter tells you "what the voltage is right now", an oscilloscope shows you in a picture "how the voltage changes over time". To see fast phenomena you cannot see with your eyes, like the output waveform of a 555 timer, switch jitter, or noise on a supply, you need an oscilloscope. The price and specs feel daunting at first, but once you know when you need one and what you look at, choosing becomes easy. This article covers what an oscilloscope is for, how to read the specs, your first measurement, what to check before buying, and alternatives.
How it differs from a multimeter
Item
Multimeter
Oscilloscope
What it shows
A value at one moment (or an average)
The waveform over time
Fast signals
Only an average is shown, so they are not visible
Shows period, height, and shape
Used for
Checking voltage, resistance, continuity
Clocks, PWM, communication signals, noise, delays
Price range
Low
High
If you work with DC supplies and simple analog circuits, a multimeter alone is enough. Once you start dealing with digital clocks, PWM, communication signals, and timing, an oscilloscope helps a lot.
How to read the specs
Bandwidth (MHz): the limit of signal frequency it can show accurately. 5 times or more the frequency of the signal you want to see is best. For hobby electronics, 20 to 100 MHz is enough.
Sample rate (GSa/s): how many samples per second. Generally it should be 4 to 5 times the bandwidth or more for the waveform to be accurate (for example, at least 500 MSa/s for 100 MHz bandwidth).
Number of channels: 2 channels is the most useful. You can compare input and output at the same time.
Memory depth: how much it can store at a high sample rate over a long time. The larger, the better for zooming in.
Vertical resolution: usually 8 bits.
Trigger functions: the function that locks the waveform steady on screen. An edge trigger is the basic, and to catch an event that happens only once (switch jitter) you need single-shot trigger.
Screen and controls: a product with intuitive knobs and a large screen is more comfortable.
How to use the probe
The probe has a ×1 and ×10 switch.
×10: attenuates the signal to one tenth. It loads the circuit less, so use ×10 for general measurement.
×1: used when looking at small signals, but the bandwidth is reduced.
The oscilloscope's setting also has to match the probe ratio. If they do not match, you read the voltage off by a factor of 10.
Probe compensation: the first time, touch the probe to the instrument's calibration terminal (a 1 kHz square wave output) and turn the probe's small trimmer until the waveform is a clean square.
Connect the ground clip to the GND of the circuit you are measuring.
Try your first measurement
Check probe compensation: look at the calibration square wave and adjust the probe.
Look at a 555 output: hold pin 3 of the 555 timer circuit with the probe, and adjust the time base so two or three periods show on screen. Read the period and High time from the screen grid and compare them with the 555 timer calculator values.
Look at switch jitter: connect a tact switch with a pull-up resistor and press it with a falling-edge single-shot trigger, and you can see how many times the contact bounces (Tact Switches and Pull-Up/Pull-Down Resistors).
Look at supply noise: viewing the 5 V rail with AC coupling lets you see the switching noise mixed into the supply. You can also see the change when you add a decoupling capacitor (Power Rails, Grounding, and Decoupling Capacitor Placement).
Types of oscilloscopes
Type
Characteristics
Bench digital
Convenient screen and knobs, stable. Many 2-channel beginner models
Handheld
Battery powered, handy for field checks, but a small screen
USB (PC-connected)
Cheap with a large screen. No knobs, so operation is different
Ultra-cheap kits and DIY
Very low price but limits in bandwidth and accuracy. For learning
An alternative: the logic analyzer
If you want to see the sequence of 0s and 1s rather than the shape of the signal, a USB logic analyzer is much cheaper and easier. It decodes and shows the contents of I2C, SPI, and serial communication. For debugging communication problems, a logic analyzer comes before an oscilloscope (I2C Wiring Basics).
Pre-purchase checklist
Decide what signals you will look at (check the highest frequency).
Check that the bandwidth is at least 5 times that frequency.
Check the number of channels (2 recommended), the sample rate, and the memory depth.
See whether two probes, ground clips, and a power adapter are included.
See whether the product has enough user manuals and community material.
Check software updates and after-sales support (repair).
Summary
An oscilloscope is a tool that shows the shape of a voltage that changes over time, and you need one when you start dealing with digital clocks, PWM, timers, and communication. Choose a bandwidth of at least 5 times the signal frequency, 2 channels, use the probe at ×10, and always connect the ground clip to the circuit's GND. It is not too late to buy one when you need it, after first getting used to How to Choose a Multimeter.
